Project Cars 2 hits PC and consoles in late 2017

It has been rumored for some time now that Project Cars, the beautiful racing simulator from 2015, would be getting a sequel at some point this year. Today, Slightly Mad Studios and publisher Bandai Namco announced that Project Cars 2 will hit Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in late 2017.

Project Cars 2 will launch with more than 60 tracks and 170 cars, which is an increase on the 30 locations and 74 cars of the original game. Gamers can expect new racing experiences on ice, dirt, mud and show, plus the usual array of realistic physics and a fully dynamic weather system.

On PC, Project Cars 2 will support what the developers call "12K resolution", which is their term for three 4K monitors in an AMD Eyefinity/Nvidia Surround setup for an immersive, panoramic experience. Technically this sort of setup does pack a resolution of 11,520 x 3840 for "12K", but it won't be as demanding on PC hardware as true 8K. Oh, and Project Cars 2 will support virtual reality headsets as well.

Today's announcement isn't actually the first time we've heard about Project Cars 2. Slightly Mad Studios launched a crowdfunding campaign for the game shortly after the launch of Project Cars in 2015, aiming to raise £7 million. It's not clear how that crowdfunding campaign turned out, but obviously the developer gained enough cash to complete the sequel by this year.
